Redmi 12 5G Review: An Affordable 5G Smartphone with Impressive Features

0

Redmi, which is known for providing affordable smartphones, recently launched the Redmi 12 5G, a device that promises to offer 5G connectivity at a low cost. In this review, we will explore various aspects of the Redmi 12 5G, including its design, display, camera, performance, battery, sensors, speakers, weight, color options, charging speed, 5G bands, IP rating, and screen brightness.

1. Design and Display:

A gorgeous glass back cover, which is rare in this price range, is offered in the Redmi 12 5G. The Moonstone Silver color option, in particular, stands out with its attractive rainbow hues, it is also available in Jade Black and Pastel Blue. When seen closely, the Moonstone Silver color of the phone shows rainbow tones, giving it an exquisite and appealing appearance.

The phone features an infinite camera deco at the top left, which enhances its minimalist design. It has a 6.79-inch FHD+ display with a punch-hole notch on the front that offers a bigger viewing area and a 90Hz adaptive refresh rate for quick and fluid operation. The phone's bigger bezels on the chin, though, might not be to everyone's taste. The display performs well for reading articles and watching OTT shows and movies, but it can attract smudges easily, so it's advisable to use a screen-guard for protection.

2. Camera:

A 50-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth-sensing sensor are included in the Redmi 12 5G's dual camera arrangement on the back. In daylight, the primary camera produces stunning images with accurate exposure and vibrant colors. Acceptable dynamic range captures details in both bright and dark areas.

Additionally, it provides a dedicated mode that allows users to snap photos at full 50MP quality for sharper photographs and warmer color tones. The phone works well in low light when the night mode is turned on, but without it, photos may appear grainy with light flaring. The 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front produces acceptable results even in well-lit settings, with minor errors in skin tones and too smooth face details.

3. Performance, Processor, RAM, and Storage:

An octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 CPU powers the Redmi 12 5G's performance, which is its main selling point. It has 4GB of RAM, which guarantees streamlined daily activities and multitasking. Considering its budget range, the processor's capabilities are very remarkable; it can perform both regular activities and gaming without exhibiting any lag. The phone smoothly runs games like BGMI and CODM, although it lacks an Extreme frame rate setting.

Based on Android 13, MIUI 14 powers the device. For all of your applications, files, and media, However, the software experience is where the device falls short. Some users may find the MIUI 14 skin, which is based on Android 13, missing the built-in icon customization that sets it apart from its competitors in terms of features. MIUI runs a lighter version, which may require upgrades for a more visually appealing appearance, despite the strong CPU.

The higher variant includes 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, while the base variant has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The combination of the processor and ample RAM ensures smooth multitasking and app performance.

4. Battery and Charging Speed:

With a 5000mAh non-removable battery, the Redmi 12 5G offers a long battery life. The 5,000mAh battery ensures all-day usage, which is a significant advantage for users who prioritize battery life. Despite the fact that the smartphone only supports 18W fast charging, Redmi 12 5G offers a 22.5 W fast charging adapter.  However, the charging speed may not be as fast as some users might desire.

5. Sensors and Connectivity:

A wide range of sensors are available on the Redmi 12 5G, including an accelerometer, IR Blaster, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, compass/magnetometer, and fingerprint sensor built into the side power button.

The phone has seamless connectivity choices for users thanks to its support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, and USB Type-C. It also has active 4G on both SIM cards. Additionally, the phone supports all seven necessary 5G bands—n1, n3, n5, n8, n28, n40, and n78—for both SA and NSA modes.

6. Colors, IP Rating, and Weight:

The Redmi 12 5G weighs 199.00 grams and has dimensions of 168.60 x 76.28 x 8.17mm. The phone has an IP53 certification, which makes it resistant to splashes of water and dust and offers some level of protection in dangerous situations.

Users can choose between Jade Black, Moonstone Silver, or Pastel Blue, three different color choices, depending on their tastes.

7. Conclusion:

The Redmi 12 5G, in conclusion, is a cost-effective device that stands out for its 5G connection, Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset, stylish appearance, and decent camera performance. The user experience is responsive and fluid, and the battery life is amazing. However, the phone does come with some pre-installed software, and the charging speed might not be fast as some users might prefer. The Redmi 12 5G delivers decent value for money performance despite these small flaws, giving it a viable choice for people looking for a 5G phone that is affordable.
